Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
