Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
