Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
