Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
