Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
