Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
