Learn to Play Craps – Tips and Schemes: The Background of Craps
Be cunning, play clever, and become versed in craps the correct way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
