Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
