Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
