Master Craps – Hints and Tactics: The Background of Craps

Be cunning, play cunning, and become versed in craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
