Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
