Be a Master of Craps – Tricks and Tactics: The Past of Craps

Be smart, play cunning, and discover how to play craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
