Master Craps – Tips and Tactics: The History of Craps
Be smart, play clever, and discover how to play craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
