Master Craps – Tips and Tactics: The History of Craps

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
