Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
