Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
