Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
