Become Versed in Craps – Hints and Plans: The Past of Craps
Be brilliant, play cunning, and master craps the correct way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
