Become Versed in Craps – Hints and Techniques: The History of Craps
Be brilliant, play brilliant, and master craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
