Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
