Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
