Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
