Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
