Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
