Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
