Be a Master of Craps – Hints and Strategies: The Background of Craps
Be cunning, play clever, and discover how to play craps the right way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
