Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
